Facing the good with the bad in an esoteric field, and being aware in advance of the pitfalls, was as commonplace as mapping out a financial projection. The Chinese, as the Japanese, are extremely superstitious and known to be the biggest gamblers of any race, so no doubt that’s why they liked to hedge their bets. The same now applies in business.
